Herman Bonner ylitti uutiskynnyksen, Niko Vuorisen Olypiahaave ja Alexander Lahtisen GP menestys ei

Miekkailussa eletään jännittäviä aikoja. Viime viikonloppuna Alexander Lahtinen ja Niko Vuorinen naulasivat Suomen huippumiekkailukerhoon. 

Alex teki Suomen parhaan sijoituksen ever miekkailun Grand Prix-osakilpailussa sijouttumalla Tukholman Challenge Bernadotte GPssä sijalle 13. Myös Niko, joka Euroopan olympiakarsintakilpailussa Bratislavassa 21.-22.4.2012 oli aivan hilkulla päästä Bratislavan karsinnoissa Olympialaisiin, veti hyvin Tukholmassa ja oli 30. kivikovassa MM-tason seurassa.

Mikä tahansa kamppailulaji olisi ylpeä näistä sijoituksista. Ei millään pahalla, mutta muista olypiakarsijoista esimerkkinä Nikon lailla pudonnut painija Petra Olli oli oikein valtakunnan radiossa haastateltavana. Pieleen meni siis vain yhdessä asiassa: Missä olivat uutiset näistä huippusuorituksista???  Jos tämän tason urheilu-uutisia ei saada läpi, niin miten suuri yleisö ikinä voi samaistua miekkailuun???  Tarjotaanko Nikoa ja Alexia medialle??  Ei sitä nyt joka päivä huipputuloksia tule muissakaan lajeissa, joten vähän kovemmin pitäisi ponnailla uutiskynnyksen yli. Me tarvitsemme miekkailun Granlundeja ja Selänteitä. Kun urheilija tekee läpimurron, se pitää lajin otsikoissa myötä- ja vastoinkäymisissä.

- Mistä tuli mieleen SM-kisojen uutisointi Hesarissa - ihan oli molemmat Suomen Mestarit mainittu TULOKSISSA. Turun Sanomissa sentään oli  kuvallinen juttu SM-hopenaisesta Nina Hyvösestä, mutta nyt eksytään jo aiheesta...

Otsikkoon viitaten; Onneksi siis edes toimihenkilöpuolella uutisointiin. Suomen miekkailuhistoriaa tehtiin, kun Herman Bonner valittiin ensimmäiseksi huippumiekkailun koordinaattoriksi. Nimitys ylitti uutiskynnyksen, joten tästä ei voi seurata kuin hyvää myös lajin mediajulkisuudelle, vaikka se ei lienkään Bonnerin tehtävän pääfokus.

Herman teki itseasiassa ensimmäisen mediatekonsa jo ennen nimitystään. Katsoessani Bernadott GPtä FIEvideon live streamista, juontaja korjasi [älkesänderlaatinen]  lausumisensa ryhdikkäästi muotoon [Lah-tin-nen] koska Herman oli opastanut fencingiä selostanutta tutkakaksikkoa Suomen kielen saloihin :)

FIE-lähetystä katsoessa muuten penkkimiekkailijan sappi kiehui kerran jos toisenkin, kun suomalaisten tiukkojen matsien sijaan näytettiin "miekkailun suurmiesten" seisoskelua alueelle. Nimi ratkaisee medianäkyvyyden myös miekkailussa. Juontaja sentään kertoilivat tasapuolisesti muidenkin alueiden tapahtumista, mutta se ei kauheasti lohduttanut.

My fencing adventure began in the Autumn of 1988. I was eleven years old at the time and fully armed with the sort of knowledge and expectations that come from a full summer of reading about Robin Hood and King Arthur. I climbed the dusty stairs of an old brick building in my hometown of Wichita, Kansas and soon became a fencer. Nearly a quarter century later and on the other side of the world, I am preparing myself for a new stage of my career in this sport of a lifetime.

In the course of my fencing career, I have been a Youth fencer, a Cadet, a Junior fencer, and a Senior fencer. I have successfully fought, trained and sacrificed my way to the podium of US National Championships at the Cadet, Junior and Senior levels. I have fenced in the tiniest club competitions and I have fenced World Cups. I have fenced and beaten famous international champions and I have also lost to terrified beginners who barely knew which end of the weapon to hold. I have worked as a club manager, program director, head coach and fencing club janitor. I have worked as a referee to many major US and North American events. I have organized and participated in dozens of training camps and bouting weekends. I have years of experience teaching fencing and working with athletes of various ages and levels. In the US, I have been elected to and served as a member of various local and regional administrative units that support fencing. I have also been involved in the organization and running of numerous sports events that were not fencing related.

Why am I in Finland? I am in Finland, because my wife, Soila, is from Finland. We met in Budapest in 1999. I was there because of fencing and she was there studying Hungarian language and culture. We have been married since 2004. We relocated to Finland in 2008, when I was accepted to the graduate program in sports management at the University of Jyväskylä.

In conclusion: I am passionate about fencing. I am a student of how it works both on the strip and off the strip. The depth of my fencing experience as participant and facilitator combined with my formal education in the field of sports management makes me confident of success in this venture to develop a stronger fencing and pentathlon community in Finland. There is a tremendous amount of work that can be done and I am highly optimistic regarding the opportunities to grow and improve the sports around the country, and look forward to working with you and for you.
